  • Introduction to Odissi Music:-
    1. Origin and development of Odissi music
    2. Differences between Odissi, Hindustani, and Carnatic music
    3. Role of Odissi music in temple rituals, dance, and Jagannath culture
  • Basic Training (Swaras and Alankars):-

    1. Saptak (Scale): Introduction to seven basic swaras – Sa, Re, Ga, Ma, Pa, Dha, Ni
    2. Practice of Swarastanas (Note positions)

      Alankars (Exercises)

    3. Simple ascending & descending pattern
    4. Patterns in rhythm (Tala)
    5. Alankar in different matras
  • Taal and Rhythm Understanding:-Introduction to:

    1. Ekatali (4 matras)
    2. Jhampa (10 matras)
    3. Tripata (7 matras)
    4. Khemata (6 matra)
    5. Rupaka (6 matras)
    6. Jati (14 matra) and other Taals of Odissi music
    7. Basic hand gestures (Taali-Khaali system)
    8. Singing swaras and compositions in different taals
  • Raaga Parichaya (Introduction to Ragas):-

    1. Ragas of Odissi tradition:
    2. Shankarabharan, Kaphi, Malabgouda, Khamaj, Mukhari,Kamodi, etc.
    3. Basic Lakshana (characteristics) of Ragas
    4. Aaroh–Avaroh, Mukhyanga (catch phrases)
    5. Raga-based Swara exercises
    • Odissi Vocal Compositions:-
      1. Swaraprastara (Swaras with variations)
      2. Bhabanga, Nayanga,  Chaupadi (traditional compositions)
      3. Chhanda – Brutta-based, rhythmic compositions (poetic meters)
      4. Champu– Traditional raaga Based composition
      5. Bhajan and janana – devotional songs
      6. Geetgobind (Jayadeva’s Ashtapadi, etc.)
  • Theory and Notation:-
    1. Brief history and Complete theory of Odissi music
    2. Music notation writing in Odia/English
    3. Importance of Raga-Tala in Odissi compositions
    4. Role of Guru-Shishya Parampara in Odissi tradition
  • VIII. Evaluation / Performance:-

    1. Swara recognition and singing tests
    2. Group singing and solo performance practice
    3. Raga and Tala-based improvisation practice
    4. Solo, Duet and Group Presentation
